#686 Karl Lagerfeld to Valentino – “Compared to us, the rest are making rags”

Definitely quote of the day – see it in context in the video below. There’s nothing better than a bit of well placed narcissism, don’t you think? I went along to the Valentino film this afternoon and walked out so stupidly happy afterward I swear people must have thought I’d just given birth or something. This film exemplifies everything I love about the fashion industry – the hype and glamour of the shows, the weekly flitting from one city to another and the daily encounters with fascinating people. Ain’t it grand?

On another point, I’m really interested in these designers – Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, and I think more recently Hedi Slimane, who seem to be entirely sheltered from everything except their design work. As far as I could see, Valentino has nothing to do with the day to day running of the business or any decision making processes, his whole world revolves around designing dresses. The reason I mention Hedi Slimane is that I read once that he can’t drive. And, now that I think about it, I remember reading an article a few years ago saying that Tom Ford had never sent an email before he left Gucci. What a strange way to live one’s life.

If you haven’t already, please see the film. It’s a staggering work of heartbreaking genius.

it was such a gorgeous film – it’s so easy to put a negative light on this particular part of the industry and i loved that this movie didnt do that at all!
