If you’re only going to see one movie this year, make it Inglourious Basterds. I went along to the media pre-screening last night with a friend and we both just about spewed it was so good. You know how it is – there are good films, then there are good Quentin Tarantino films. And a good Quentin Tarantino film is probably the closest thing to absolute cinematic magic that I’ve ever come across.
I don’t want to give any of the story away but basically the film is about Nazi occupied France during World War Two, and a group of American Jewish soldiers who take it upon themselves to rid the world of Nazi scum. It stars Brad Pitt in his best role since the lovable but dumb Chad in Burn After Reading, but the real star of the film is French actress Melanie Laurent – if you walk out without falling in love with her, I’ll give you your money back. I actually met her (very briefly) at the Elie Saab show in Paris and got a couple of photos. I vaguely recognised her from her role in Paris but Inglourious Basterds is her first English speaking film.
Then there’s Christoph Waltz, who plays the Jew Hunter – the most frightening character since Hannibal Lecter – his ability to draw out tension with the most subtle of pauses killed me everytime. Because of him this was possibly the most stressful movie of all time, and I loved every moment of it.
GO SEE IT!
