Friends! I’m flying to Europe tomorrow! I’m a crazed mixture of excited and scared, ecstatic and anxious. First stop Milan, where I’ll catch up with everybody’s favourite German Corinna Studier, plus fellow New Zealanders Christopher Landon, Courtney Fallow, India Ross and maybe even Michael Whittaker. Milan menswear begins on Saturday and ends on Tuesday, and I’ll be covering it all – the shows, the people, the adventures, the celebrities and whatever else I can get my hands on. Shows of note include Burberry, Gucci, Jil Sander, Prada, Zegna… Let’s hope I have invitations to all of the above when I arrive at my hotel.
Next stop, Paris. I fly in Tuesday night about seven hours after the final Milan show and head straight to my best good friend Tessa’s house – she’s very kindly allowing me to stay for the duration of my visit. There I have a day’s rest before the Paris menswear shows begin. Lanvin, Dior Homme, Raf Simons, Dries Van Noten, Ann Demeulemeester, Rick Owens, Cerruti, JPG… Oh my excitement. New Zealanders in attendance include Zambesi’s Dayne Johnston (who’s showing the men’s collection in a showroom in Le Marais), Michael Whittaker, Marty from Fabric, Mark from Wunderkammer, and no doubt a few extras we’ll find along the way.
A few days later the Paris Film Festival begins. Wellingtonians Mark and Louis are showing their award winning short The Six Dollar Fifty Man, and I’m tagging along for the ride – GO THE KIWIS!
Finally, on the fifth of July, Paris Haute Couture begins – Chanel, Christian Dior, Givenchy, Armani Prive, Jean Paul Gaultier… The glamour, the gowns, the girls!
Annnnnd then on the tenth of July I come back home.
Look out for my writing online at the NZ Herald, in the Dominion Post and online at stuff.co.nz.
