The trick to Melbourne appears to be to walk down every back alley, climb up every set of stairs and generally go where no man seems to have gone before. Take Chiodo, for example, one of the coolest stores I’ve seen anywhere – we discovered it quite by accident on our way to a Japanese restaurant (which, conveniently, was housed behind a big black curtain behind a big glass door with few discernible markings). Chiodo specialises in Comme des Garcons but also sells its own namesake brand which is designed and manufactured right here in Australia.
It’s a giant space housed in a basement off Russell Street in the CBD sparsely decorated with wacky art, medical tables, fencing helmets and typewriters. The brand has been around since 1989, and its first store just happens to have been shared with Zambesi in an old Bank vault before the days of Zambesi Man. I bought two things – the Chiodo dip-dyed flannel check shirt (above), and a multi-coloured Comme tee shirt (below).
Chiodo has plans to open up in Sydney early next year, and I reckon a New Zealand store would go down a treat as well. Here’s hoping.
I LIKE YOU!
