I know I don’t usually do a straight product post of this variety, but I had an hour to kill in Soho yesterday, so I figured what better way to pass the time than to go for a browse through my favourite brands’ boutiques? I stopped by Saint Laurent — the tobacco coloured suede fringe jackets are next level. I checked out Burberry — if you’re in the market for a denim suit, look no further. But it was at Dior Homme that I saw my next purchase; this is the shoe.
They’re black leather derbies with a Dr Martens-style sole and an upper covered in staples, and I hadn’t previously noticed them in the collection. One of the things about going to the shows in Europe is that because I’m generally seated back a few rows (behind the more established editors), I usually see the models from the mid thigh up, so I typically won’t know what’s happening in the shoe department until I visit the showroom and see and touch the collection IRL. These bad boys have me hooked.
I sent them to my friend Romy this morning, and her exact reply to me was, “Very cool, very edgy for you, no?” She’s not wrong — they are a little edgier than what I’d normally wear. But I’m picturing them with 90s style stonewash jeans and a beaten up t-shirt, and that’s it. After all, the great thing about an amazing pair of shoes is that they’ll elevate the simplest outfit. And that’s all you can hope for when it’s 35 degrees outside in the middle of summer in New York City (which might occur one day if it ever stops snowing).
