First it was Rebel Without a Cause, now this candy-shop-inspired outfit, next it’ll probably be Cadillac convertibles and Brylcreem. I am going deep on 1950s style right now. Truth be told, I’ve always had an affinity for the decade — it was the peak era of Ivy League style, the heyday of Steve McQueen and Paul Newman, and the slightly more preppy, slightly more conservative lead-up to the 1960s where things got a little darker and sharper and edgier (see: Stones, Rolling, et al). Achieving the look is simple: Pull your pants about two inches higher than what you’re used to (this obviously can’t be done with lowrise styles), have them cropped at the ankle an inch or two higher than usual, tuck yourself in, always wear a white T-shirt beneath whatever it is you’re rocking, keep your shoes as heavy-soled and sturdy as possible, and never shy away from a pop of red. Das it.
