Hey, gidday mates! First things first, I went to the Rihanna concert last night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn (shout out to my mate Jeff for the hookup) and god damn that girl can perform. Over the course of 90 minutes she sang all the hits, changed outfits five times, fronted three different dance troupes, gave props to the one dude in the audience holding a Barbados flag, asked a young girl in the front if the guy next to her was her dad, the girl said no, then Rihanna was like, “Whoops, it’s your date,” and generally killed it. Huge effort. Huge!
In other news, I’m giving streetwear another go in my old age. Growing up as a skater kid in New Zealand, all I wore were baggy jeans and hoodies, but as I got older, the fits got slimmer, the relaxed layers got swapped out for tailoring, and the sneakers got replaced by the leather lace-ups I swore I’d never ever ever wear.
And now I’m coming full circle. Maybe it’s the skaters I see in Tompkins Square Park every day, maybe it’s the rise of Vetements’ designer streetwear, or maybe it’s the influence of this Italian girl Chiara Capitani, who pretty much wears a female version of everything I’m feeling right now.
The formula is pretty simple: Take one pair of blue jeans, add a hoodie (this one cost less than $25 from Champion), throw a bomber over top, and some Nikes or Vans Sk8 lows down below and you’re done. Add white socks for extra freshness. Das it das it.
